Chimney & Fireplace Repair

in Calgary & Area

Weather, moisture, regular use and ordinary aging can affect the exterior and interior components of a chimney or fireplace system.

Crown Chimney Sweeps assesses visible concerns, explains the available options and completes a range of common chimney and fireplace repairs for Calgary homeowners.

From chimney caps and dampers to minor masonry, firebox components and drafting concerns, we help you understand the issue before any repair proceeds.

Professional Chimney & Fireplace Repairs

Start With the Cause, Not Just the Symptom

A chimney and fireplace system is made up of several connected components. Masonry, mortar, flashing, caps, dampers, firebox materials, liners and venting components each perform a different role. A visible problem in one area may also be connected to conditions elsewhere in the system.

For example, staining near a fireplace may be related to the chimney cap, crown, flashing, masonry, roof or another source of water entry. Smoke entering the room may involve deposits, an obstruction, chimney height, appliance operation, house pressure, weather or installation details. Looking at the complete concern helps avoid treating every symptom as though it has the same cause.

Crown Chimney Sweeps begins with the information you provide and a review of the visible, accessible components related to the concern. We explain what was observed, identify the work we can appropriately complete and discuss when another trade or a more detailed inspection is required.

Repair availability depends on the system, materials, access, weather and extent of deterioration. No additional work proceeds without your knowledge and approval.

Signs That a Repair May Be Needed

When Something Does Not Look or Work Right

Visible Exterior Damage

Cracked or missing mortar, loose masonry, a deteriorated crown, damaged flashing or a leaning or unstable-looking component should be assessed. Photographs taken safely from the ground can help us understand the concern before the appointment.

Water or Moisture Signs

Staining, dampness, peeling finishes, mineral deposits or water near the fireplace may indicate a chimney-related concern, but the source is not always obvious. Roof, flashing, masonry and condensation conditions may all need to be considered.

Damaged Fireplace Components

A damper that no longer opens or closes as expected, deteriorated firebox mortar, cracked accessible firebrick, a damaged cap or another worn component may require adjustment, repair or replacement.

Smoke or Drafting Changes

Smoke entering the room, difficulty establishing a draft or performance that has changed over time can have several possible causes. Stop using the appliance if conditions concern you and describe exactly what happens when you contact us.

What to Expect

Inside a Crown Repair Service

The appropriate process depends on the component, access, materials and extent of the concern. Some minor repairs can be completed during a scheduled service appointment. Others require an assessment, parts or materials, suitable weather and a separate return visit.

1

Share the Concern

Tell us what you have noticed, when it began and whether the issue appears inside, outside or during appliance use. Include the type of fireplace, wood stove or insert when known.

Photographs are particularly helpful for visible exterior damage, missing caps, mortar deterioration, water staining and unusual components. Take photos only from a safe location; do not climb onto the roof for the purpose of a repair inquiry.

The information provided helps us recommend an appropriate starting appointment. A preliminary discussion or photograph review is not a final diagnosis or repair quote.

2

Assess the Accessible Components

The technician examines the visible and accessible areas related to the reported concern. Depending on the system and scheduled scope, this may include the firebox, damper, smoke chamber, accessible flue, chimney cap, crown, masonry, flashing or other serviceable components.

We look for visible deterioration, damage, movement, gaps, corrosion, water-entry clues, obstructions and installation conditions that may affect the repair. Photographs and measurements may be taken when they help document the issue or plan the work.

Concealed components cannot be represented as assessed unless access to them forms part of the scheduled service. Cleaning, a WETT inspection, invasive access or evaluation by another trade may be recommended when the cause cannot be confirmed through the available access.

3

Explain the Scope & Options

Once the accessible condition is understood, we explain what was observed and the available next step. Depending on the finding, that may be a minor repair, replacement of an accessible component, further troubleshooting, a more detailed inspection or referral to a mason, roofer, fireplace specialist or other qualified trade.

When a repair can be accurately scoped, we explain the work and applicable cost before proceeding. If parts, additional access, suitable weather or a return appointment are required, those details will be discussed with you.

Any price discussed before the property or component has been seen is based on the information available at booking. If conditions differ from what was described, the scope and cost may change. You will be informed before additional work begins.

4

Complete the Approved Repair

Approved work is completed using methods and materials appropriate for the component and agreed scope. The technician protects the surrounding work area, removes service-related debris and reviews the completed work with you when practical.

If another condition becomes visible during the repair, we pause and explain what was found. Additional work is not automatically added to the appointment.

The completed repair addresses the agreed component and conditions accessible within that scope. It does not represent a guarantee regarding concealed areas, unrelated building components or future conditions outside the repaired area.

Professional Assessment

The Right Tools Begin With the Right Access

Repair work starts by understanding the component and the condition that can be observed. Depending on the appointment, Crown may use inspection lights, mirrors, cameras, measuring tools, hand tools, ladders and exterior-access equipment to assess accessible areas and plan the work. The tools, materials and access method used for the repair depend on the chimney, fireplace, roof, appliance and agreed scope. Indoor work areas are prepared with appropriate coverings, and service-related debris is collected when the work is complete. Exterior repairs may be affected by roof conditions, wind, rain, snow, temperature and access. If conditions do not allow the work to be completed appropriately, the repair may need to be rescheduled.

Common Chimney & Fireplace Repairs

Repairs Done Right.

A missing, damaged or deteriorated cap may allow rain, leaves, debris or animals to enter an exposed flue. Crown can assess accessible chimney caps and spark-arrester components and discuss cleaning, repair or replacement options where appropriate.
Dampers and related accessible fireplace components can become difficult to operate, damaged or worn. We can examine the visible mechanism, identify serviceable concerns and explain whether adjustment, repair, cleaning or replacement is appropriate.

Small areas of deteriorated mortar, localized masonry concerns and minor exterior defects may be serviceable depending on their location and extent. Larger rebuilds, structural movement or widespread deterioration may require a dedicated masonry contractor.

Firebox mortar, accessible firebrick and other interior components can deteriorate with age and use. We assess the visible condition and determine whether the area is suitable for a localized repair or requires more extensive specialized work.
Water around a chimney may enter through more than one location. We examine accessible chimney-related details and explain whether the visible condition appears to involve a serviceable chimney component, roof flashing, masonry, condensation or another area requiring a roofer or other trade.
Smoke and drafting concerns can be influenced by the chimney, appliance, deposits, obstruction, house pressure, chimney height, weather and operating conditions. Crown can help identify an appropriate starting assessment and explain visible findings or recommended follow-up work.

When an accessible chimney or fireplace component is damaged, we consider the function of the part, compatibility with the existing system and availability of a suitable replacement. Not every older or discontinued component can be repaired or replaced directly.

Full chimney rebuilds, major structural masonry, extensive roofing work, concealed framing repairs, gas work, electrical work and invasive building access may fall outside Crown’s scheduled repair scope. When another qualified trade is more appropriate, we will explain why.
